Belleville Assisted Living

Located in historic Algiers Point, Belleville Elementary School long served as a focal point of the surrounding neighborhood and a key element of the community. Over the years, the school became an eyesore as the abandoned building sat dormant for many years.

To renovate the historic school building and adapt it to serve senior residents, Woodward provided design-build services with extensive engineering to repair the building’s precarious structural condition. The original school building was renovated into the main building of Belleville Assisted Living. Where the schoolyard once stood, a newly constructed building, designed to match the historic structure, was outfitted to house additional apartment space for senior living. The original historic kindergarten building was also repurposed to provide senior apartments.

The Belleville Assisted Living complex was built around a central courtyard surrounded by a chapel and multi-purpose building that provides salon services and community space for numerous activities. A single story home previously on the property was moved to another location to serve as administrative offices for the Belleville staff.

On March 28, 2012, the old Belleville Elementary School reopened its doors as Belleville Assisted Living, bringing a historic neighborhood landmark back to use. The project earned a Louisiana Landmark Society 2014 Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
