Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery

The Old No. 77 Hotel and Chandlery building, with humble origins as a port warehouse, is now an “unconventionally historic” hotel on the border of New Orleans’ trendy Warehouse/Arts District.

Originally constructed in 1854 as a coffee warehouse serving the Port of New Orleans, the building later became a chandlery, or general wholesale business, providing various items to sailors preparing for voyages including canvas, rope, paper, tobacco and patent medicines. In recent years the building had been operating as the Ambassador Hotel before becoming the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery.

To convert the former Ambassador Hotel into the new Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery, Woodward Design+Build renovated 167 guest rooms, and designed and built a new lobby, bar, and kitchen, and restaurant. The hotel operated continuously through the project, which required the design-build team to keep noise and dust at a minimum, and to consider other factors to ensure that the guest experience was not disrupted. The project was completed successfully in June 2015 and began serving customers shortly thereafter.

Designed by Woodward Design Group and built by Woodward, the result of this renovation is an excellent example of the success that can be achieved through a truly collaborative design-build process.
